In this era of reality television, where real world people continue to expose themselves to the masses in order to win some big prize, whether it is $1,000,000 from CBS's Survivor, which some people think is the show that started it all when everybody knows it was really MTV's The Real World, or a record contract from FOX's American Idol. There are a few of the shows that I actually do typically enjoy. I previously thought that FOX was crossing the line from entertainment to absolute garbage when they aired My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance and The Littlest Groom. I admit that I actually enjoyed watching every episode of Obnoxious Fiance, as it was very funny to see how she reacted to the idiot stunts he pulled to make himself look like a true slob, although he was a hired actor just playing a part. Now when I heard about ABC's latest stunt, and yes, I do believe it is nothing more than a ratings stunt, I was appalled. It seems that ABC and Barbara Walters are doing a 1 hour segment on 20/20 called Be My Baby in which five couples compete for the chance to win a baby that is up for adoption after a 16 year old girl gives birth. It really seems as if ABC thinks that wrapping this farse up in the blanket of news will help them to shed the image that this is crossing the line. They even say in their description of the show
"So with the guidance of "A Child's Waiting" adoption agency, Jessica and her mother select five families to interview and they become the judge and jury in an extraordinary competition."
that it is a competition. While I do believe that some interesting parts of the adoption process that are often hidden from public eyes will be seen, I also think that to air this process to the world is a travesty. Is there nothing sacred left in this world? Being as this took place in October of last year, I would imagine that she has had the baby and given it away to the winning couple, but what if after all this she decided that she wanted to keep the baby, after all these couples have exposed their priviate lives to the world, or even if she went through with giving the baby up, but the father decided that he wanted to keep the baby?
