After hearing the news about Alonzo Mourning's forced retirement from basketball due to a condition with his kidneys that requires a transplant, I was a bit more than sad to hear this. Although I am not a basketball fan, I have always liked the way Alonzo, just went out there and did his job, and did it well, without being one of those guys that's always in trouble with the law or just cocky in general (Randy Moss, Keyshawn Johnson to mention a couple). Everybody knows you're good at playing a particular sports, if you weren't, you wouldn't be in the pros. You don't need to remind us by writing a book called Just Give Me the Damn Ball. I have for quite a while admired Alonzo's dedication to the game, and overall attitude towards other players and people. I was reading a bit more on this subject earlier today, when I stumbled on an article stating how many people from all over the country have volunteered to donate their kidney to Alonzo. Of course, there will be a screening process for the candidates to locate a match for Alonzo. Although this outpouring of support picks up my spirits, like I would expect it to for many people. As much as this shows the generosity of many people in this world, it also shows the selfishness to a certain extent. Why are these people so willing to donate a kidney for Alonzo, but not for some young mother, who has a young child at home who is about to lose their mother? There are many people out there who have led good lives and need a kidney transplant, and perhaps have been on the waiting list for years, yet Alonzo Mourning needs a transplant, and he can have his pick, so to speak.
Although it shows the good and bad, I do agree that if people out there are willing to donate their kidney to help save Alonzo, then I am for it, at least someone will get a chance to live longer.
